By default, the plugin sends only a public image URL to the AltTextLab server, which is enough for the AI to analyze the content and generate a relevant description. However, if your site or media is not publicly accessible, you can enable an option in the settings to upload the image itself instead. In both cases, the AI processes the image and returns descriptive alt text based on its visual content and your configured settings (such as product name, brand, or keywords).

By default, AltTextLab does not replace any manually written alt text — it only fills in missing fields. However, if you want to regenerate alt text for any images (including those that already have it), you can do so manually. The bulk generation tool also allows you to choose whether to generate new alt text for all images, regardless of whether they already have existing text.
