Yes. Adding a redirect is one of Google's recommended ways to resolve "Not found (404)" errors. Once Google recrawls the affected URLs, the errors drop out of the report. Recrawling can take days or weeks depending on your site.

No. Logging only runs when a page actually returns a 404 — normal page views do no extra work at all. Because each unique URL is stored once with a counter rather than one row per hit, even a heavy bot scan adds almost nothing.

It is hard-capped at 1,000 rows. Once the cap is reached, the least recently seen entries are removed automatically. There is nothing to maintain and no way for it to grow without limit.
