Yes, to send. Emerge does the sending, tracking and bounce handling, and it's free for up to 300 emails a day. Without a connection the plugin doesn't touch your site's email — WordPress delivers it as usual — though admin-notification suppression and the Activity Log still work.
No. Emerge sends through the sender accounts you connect to it — your Gmail, Microsoft 365, SES, SMTP, SendGrid, Mailgun or Brevo account — so your email keeps your own domain's reputation and authentication.
Site email falls back to WordPress's default mail, so password resets and receipts still go out. Campaign emails over the limit are held and sent the next day.
Nothing breaks in 2.0: your connections keep sending, and once you connect Emerge they become the fallback. You can't add new ones, and 2.1 removes them — so connect Emerge and add the same accounts as senders there before upgrading to 2.1. A notice on your Dashboard reminds you until you do.
Emerge Campaigns is now part of Emerge Mail. Connect Emerge, then click Switch to Emerge Mail: it moves your contacts, segments, templates, campaigns, automations and settings, and deactivates Emerge Campaigns. After that it's safe to delete Emerge Campaigns — your data stays with Emerge Mail, and subscribe forms and links in emails you've already sent keep working.
Yes. Disconnect Emerge any time and WordPress's own mail takes over. Your contacts can be exported from Emerge as a CSV, and your templates and campaigns stay in WordPress.
Yes. Anything that uses wp_mail() — which is virtually every WordPress plugin that sends email — works without modification.
Yes. Set the From name under Emerge Mail → Senders → Sender settings (blank uses your site title), and optionally set Reply-To to your admin email. The From address is the Emerge sender's.
Hook the emerge_mail_bounce_received action. It fires once per bounce or complaint with a uniform payload: email, disposition (hard / soft / complaint), type, subject, mailbox, from, provider, reason, message_id, client_ref, and source. To tie a bounce back to your own records, set an X-Emerge-Mail-Ref header on the original wp_mail() call — its value comes back as client_ref.
Yes, with or without an Emerge account. Open Emerge Mail → Settings and tick the notifications you want stopped. Suppressed notifications are recorded in Emerge Mail → Activity Log so you still have an audit trail. End-user notifications (password resets, account changes, new-user welcome) are intentionally not listed — users need those.
