Use the Template Language setting (in the Site Editor, under Appearance → Editor → Templates) when you have a group of pages or posts that all share the same language and use the same template — for example, a dedicated template for all your French-language posts. The language set on the template is automatically applied to every page or post using it, so you don't need to configure each one individually. It can always be overridden at the individual post or page level. Use the Page Language setting (in the Document Settings sidebar) when a specific page or post is written in a different language, either overriding the template-level setting or setting it independently when no template language is defined. This overrides the lang attribute on the HTML element itself, which corresponds to WCAG 3.1.1 (Language of Page). Use the Block Language setting (in the block’s sidebar panel) when only a specific section within a page is in a different language, while the rest of the page remains in the site’s default language. This corresponds to WCAG 3.1.2 (Language of Parts).

Yes, with an experimental feature that is off by default and may still change. When it is on, a page or post with its own language (set on the page itself or on its template) also shows texts such as dates, comment forms, post navigation and buttons in that language, as long as WordPress has the language installed. To turn it on, add this line to your theme’s functions.php file or to a small must-use plugin in wp-content/mu-plugins/: add_filter( 'nakedcatplugins_lang_attribute_blocks_switch_locale', '__return_true' ); The filter also receives the page or post ID and its language code, so you can turn it on for only some of them.

It applies to single pages and posts only, not to the blog page, archives or search results. When a page or post is saved with a language WordPress does not have yet, that language is downloaded from WordPress.org in the background, along with the theme’s and plugins’ translations for it. While a language is missing, Administrators also get a “Download translations” link next to this plugin on the Plugins page. The download runs on WP-Cron. If your website has WP-Cron disabled, make sure a real cron job runs it. Until the language is installed, the page shows these texts in the website’s language, so it never ends up half translated. Texts the theme or a plugin prepares before WordPress knows which page is being shown stay in the website’s language. To use another installed locale for a language, use the nakedcatplugins_lang_attribute_blocks_page_locale filter. For example, to show Angolan Portuguese (pt-AO) pages with the European Portuguese (pt_PT) translations, when your theme has no pt_AO translation: add_filter( 'nakedcatplugins_lang_attribute_blocks_page_locale', function ( $locale, $lang ) { return 'pt-AO' === $lang ? 'pt_PT' : $locale; }, 10, 2 );

The idea is to keep it simple and help content and website editors set different language sections, with as many child-blocks as they want, instead of setting it block by block.
