Core Web Vitals are three real-world performance metrics — LCP (Largest Contentful Paint), INP (Interaction to Next Paint), and CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) — that Google uses as a direct ranking signal in Google Search. Sites that pass Google's Core Web Vitals thresholds receive a ranking boost over competitors with poor scores. This plugin lets you monitor all three inside WordPress, for both mobile and desktop.
No. The plugin works out of the box using Google's public PageSpeed Insights API endpoint — no API key, account, or sign-up required. However, if you run a high-traffic site or trigger many manual refreshes, you can optionally add your own free Google API key in the plugin settings to increase your rate limit and avoid throttling.
The plugin uses real-world field data from the Google Chrome UX Report (CrUX) — the same dataset Google uses to evaluate your site for search rankings. CrUX collects performance measurements from real Chrome users who have opted into usage statistics. When CrUX field data is available, it is always used. For low-traffic sites where CrUX data isn't available, the plugin falls back to Lighthouse lab data from the PageSpeed Insights API.
This means Google's Chrome UX Report does not have enough real-user data for your URL yet. CrUX requires a minimum threshold of real Chrome users visiting your site over the past 28 days to generate a report. This typically happens for new sites, very low-traffic sites, or specific pages that aren't visited often enough. You can verify this at PageSpeed Insights directly.
The plugin automatically refreshes your data once per week using WordPress WP-Cron in the background. You can also trigger an instant manual refresh at any time by clicking the "Refresh Data Now" button on the Core Web Vitals admin page or the "Refresh Data" button in the dashboard widget.
Yes. Go to Core Web Vitals → Settings and enter your preferred URL in the "Alternate URL to Check" field. The plugin will fetch PageSpeed Insights data for that specific URL instead of your homepage. This is useful for tracking high-value pages like product pages, landing pages, or key blog posts.
The Speed Checker page (found in the Core Web Vitals submenu) shows your full Lighthouse scores — Performance, Accessibility, Best Practices, and SEO — displayed as visual gauge dials, just like the PageSpeed Insights website. It also lists the most impactful Lighthouse audit findings (render-blocking resources, unused JavaScript, oversized images, etc.) so you know exactly what to fix.
LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) measures how long it takes for the largest visible element on your page to fully load. Common causes of poor LCP are: slow server response times, render-blocking JavaScript or CSS, unoptimized hero images, and no lazy loading. To improve LCP: use a fast host, enable a caching plugin, optimize and compress your images, and defer non-critical JavaScript.
INP (Interaction to Next Paint) replaced FID (First Input Delay) as a Core Web Vital in March 2024. It measures how quickly your page responds to user interactions — clicks, taps, and key presses. Poor INP is usually caused by heavy JavaScript execution, large DOM sizes, and long tasks on the main thread. To improve INP: reduce unused JavaScript, optimize third-party scripts, and minimize long tasks.
CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) measures how much your page's layout shifts unexpectedly while loading. A high CLS score means elements are jumping around as the page loads, creating a poor user experience. Common causes: images without defined dimensions, ads that load dynamically, and web fonts that cause FOIT/FOUT. To improve CLS: always set width and height on images and videos, and avoid inserting content above existing content after load.
