Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Pattern Builder

No. Everything that happens on your site works without one. The account on patternbuilderwp.com is for keeping patterns somewhere other than one theme and installing them on other sites, and the free tier covers 25 patterns.
The Agents tab writes a message for Claude Code, which sets the connection up itself. Any MCP client that can send an Authorization header connects the same way: the server is at /wp-json/pattern-builder/v1/mcp and the credential is a WordPress Application Password. The same abilities are reachable over plain REST, under wp-abilities/v1, with no MCP involved.
No. Pattern Builder doesn't call a model, and the only services it ever talks to are the ones listed under External services. What an agent you connect reads from the site goes to that agent's provider under your agreement with them, the same as anything else you show it.
Yes, with any theme that supports the block editor. It does the most for block themes, where the templates, template parts and design system are all there to be read and written.
Yes. Theme patterns (the PHP files in your theme's patterns directory) and user patterns (stored in the database) are managed in one interface. The patterns your plugins register are browsable alongside them; a plugin owns those, so they're read-only until you copy one.
Yes, and with no code to write. Choose a post type in the Pattern Bindings panel and the ACF fields attached to it are offered alongside that post type's own custom fields. One ACF setting has to be on first: open the field, and under Presentation switch on "Allow Access to Value in Editor UI". ACF leaves that off for any field created since its 6.3.6, and a field without it renders nothing wherever it is bound, so Pattern Builder doesn't offer one until it's on.
Yes. Anything registered as post meta with show_in_rest is offered automatically. For data of your own, register a block binding source: WordPress resolves the value from your PHP callback, and registering the same source in the editor with a getFieldsList puts your fields in the panel.
