Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about RowanWeb Markdown for AI – .md Pages & llms.txt

Open any page on your site and add .md to the end of the address (remove a trailing slash first, if there is one) — you should get plain markdown text instead of the normal page.
Yes, with no setup. If ACF (free or Pro) is active, every field used on a page is added to its .md version and to llms-full.txt automatically, under its own heading. Supported field types include text, textarea, WYSIWYG, number, email, URL, link, select, checkbox, radio, true/false, image, gallery, post object, relationship, table, and nested group, repeater and flexible content fields. Field labels can optionally be translated into your site's language with your own DeepL API key (see "External services"). If the automatic output misses something on a particular page, you can replace that page's markdown by hand in the post editor.
If your SEO plugin (Yoast SEO or Rank Math) already has its own llms.txt generation enabled, this plugin intentionally stays silent to avoid a conflict — the Diagnostics tab shows which plugin is currently serving it.
It's a snapshot of the community-maintained ai.robots.txt catalog (MIT License), bundled with the plugin and refreshed with each plugin release. Nothing is downloaded at runtime.
No. Search engines index your pages exactly as before. The extra files — .md pages, /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt — tell Google and Bing not to index them (an X-Robots-Tag: noindex addressed to googlebot and bingbot only), so they never compete with your pages in search results, while AI crawlers can still read them. The plugin does not change robots.txt.
No. Versions before 1.3.2 added a group of Allow rules for every known AI crawler; a crawler with its own group ignores the site's User-agent: * rules, so that could switch off your other Disallow rules for those crawlers. Now robots.txt is left entirely to you, and the "robots.txt" check on the Diagnostics tab shows whether your rules let AI crawlers read the .md pages and llms files, and what to change if they don't. The plugin also checks robots.txt daily and shows an admin notice if a rule closes the .md pages or llms files to AI crawlers by accident. Crawlers you closed completely on purpose don't trigger it, and a site hidden from search engines (Settings → Reading) is never nagged. Pro doesn't update: "cURL error 35" or "Connection reset by peer" The Pro update is downloaded from Amazon S3, where Freemius stores it; some hosting providers, mostly in Russia, block connections to it. The free version on WordPress.org is not affected. Download the current Pro zip from your Freemius account and upload it in Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin (WordPress offers to replace the current version), or ask your host to allow connections to *.amazonaws.com, or set a proxy with WP_PROXY_HOST and WP_PROXY_PORT in wp-config.php.
No. Page content is only ever served in response to a normal HTTP request, exactly like any other page on your site. The plugin makes no outgoing connections on its own (the robots.txt check on the Diagnostics tab only loads your own site's robots.txt, when you click it). The only exceptions are listed under "External services" below, and both are off until you turn them on: the DeepL translation of custom-field labels (only if you add your own DeepL API key) and the Freemius opt-in.
