Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about ToolDocs™

Any type your WordPress site allows: PDF, DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, PPT, PPTX, ZIP and more.
As large as your server's PHP and WordPress upload limits allow (shown in the upload dialog). ToolDocs sends files over 8 MB in pieces, so a proxy that limits the size of one request, such as Cloudflare's free plan at 100 MB, doesn't stop larger uploads.
In wp-content/uploads/tooldocs/ by default. You can choose another folder inside wp-content/uploads/ in Settings › General.
Nothing: the permalink and shortcodes stay the same and now serve the new file. The previous file is kept as a version if Settings › Files & versions keeps any, and you can restore it from the document's Versions tab.
Use [tooldocs_file id="X"], or copy the shortcode from the document's page in the admin. The link shows the document's display title (its file name if it has none); add link_text="Custom text" to use your own text.
Yes. Use [tooldocs_category id="Y"], or copy it from the category in the admin. The documents open in a pop-up by default; add modal="false" to list them on the page.
No. [tooldocs_category_files category_id="Y"] keeps working and shows the same list. Its new name is [tooldocs_category id="Y"], which the admin now gives you and which ToolDocs Premium uses too, so new pages should use it. With WP_DEBUG on, WordPress notes the old name as deprecated.
Administrators always can. On a new install, or when you update from 1.0.x, editors can open ToolDocs and manage documents; authors and contributors can't. Change this in Settings › Permissions. Reports are for administrators until you give other roles or people "View reports".
It adds a rule to the .htaccess file of each document folder so the files can't be opened by their direct address, only through their ToolDocs permalink, which counts the download. It works on servers that read .htaccess (Apache, LiteSpeed). On nginx, ToolDocs shows a rule to add to the server configuration. It is off by default.
Yes. Every download through a ToolDocs permalink is counted. Repeat requests from the same browser within a few seconds, browser prefetches, HEAD requests and resumed (partial) downloads are not. See the totals on the Overview, in Reports › Downloads and on each document's Downloads tab, and export them as CSV.
